Introduction
National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced in 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Very appropriately, the motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU” An NSS volunteer places the “community” before the “self”.
Objectives of NSS
NSS aims at developing the following qualities/ competencies among the volunteers:
- To identify, understand and help in solving the needs and problems of the community.
- To develop a sense of civic and social responsibility.
- To develop competence required for group-living, sharing of responsibilities, cooperative attitude, and leadership quality.
- To gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
- To develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
- To practice National Integration and Social Harmony.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the programme, volunteers will be able to:
- Transform into progressive citizens.
- Indulge in nation-building activities.
- Practice social and humanitarian skills.
- Understand and find sustainable solutions for social problems.
- Develop a social perspective of learning and build leadership skills.
